The Definition of Camping

At its most basic, camping is a time to escape the distractions of modern life and enjoy nature. Whether it be in the backcountry or at your local campground, you can camp for any length of time and have an awesome experience. Having a few key items with you will help to make your camping trip more comfortable and enjoyable. For example, a few rugs will help to keep your tent clean and can be used as seating.

Definition

Camping is a recreational activity that involves leaving behind modern society and embracing nature in all its unspoiled beauty. It is often combined with other outdoor activities, such as hiking/trekking and fishing, or can be a standalone experience. It may be as minimalist as using only a tent and what one brings with them, or it can be quite luxurious, like glamping. Some people also use their cars as camping vehicles, referred to as car-camping. It is also used in the context of first person shooter video games, where it refers to staying in one particular spot on a map for prolonged periods of time with the intention of gaining a tactical advantage over an enemy or group of enemies. This can sometimes be legitimate (snipers are prone to 'camping' a point from which they can pick off enemies without risk of retaliation), and other times it can be illegitimate, such as'spawn camping' where a player waits for an enemy to spawn and then immediately assaults them.

Origins

Modern recreational camping started in America in the 1860s. Its origin can be traced to the encampments set up by military forces during their excursions, but it really took off when Thomas Hiram Holding wrote Camper's Handbook in 1908. He is considered the father of organized camping as he helped transform it from an individual or group necessity into a leisure activity. The turn of the century saw the formation of great outdoor youth organizations which incorporated camping into their programs. These included the Boy Scouts (Ernest Thompson Seton, 1910), the Girl Guides (patterned after the Girl Scouts of Great Britain, 1910), and the Camp Fire Boys and Girls (U.S., 1910). These groups, along with the YMCA and YWCA, helped popularize camping among the general public. Today, campgrounds can be classified into three categories: family, community and commercial. They vary in their goals, programs, physical equipment and leadership. The classification reflects the intent of the campers, and is not meant to be critical of any one type of camp.

Activities

Camping can be a fun and refreshing recreational activity that individuals, friends, families and even organisations can enjoy. It is a wonderful rejuvenation option for all age groups and can be easily organised. It can be as simple as pitching a tent, or more adventurous, such as backpacking and fastpacking. It can be done on public land or private property, and the accommodation may range from a primitive shelter to a motor home or caravan. It can be combined with activities such as hiking, fishing and white-water rafting. Camping can also be a learning experience for young people, as it teaches them about the natural environment. It can also help them to be independent and rely on themselves, which is an important life skill. For example, they will learn how to purify water and cook their own food in the wild. They will also learn how to survive in the cold, without the benefit of electricity and hot showers.

Safety

Camping is a popular outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family. It can be done in a variety of ways and can include everything from roughing it in a tent to staying in a cabin with all the creature comforts. Whether you choose to go glamping or rough it, safety should be the top priority when planning your camping trip. The ACA recommends that camps provide clear and complete information to campers and their parents regarding the nature of the activities and associated risks. This practice can help engender a greater level of understanding and buy-in by the participants, thus potentially minimizing incidents or resulting claims. Camping is the perfect way to get in touch with nature, see the stars away from the city lights and spend some quality time with your loved ones. Whether you are young or old, it is a rejuvenation activity that is sure to make your holidays memorable.
