What Your Nails Reveal About Your Health

Nails may not reveal the soul, but they do reflect our health. While many overlook their nails, certain warning signs should never be ignored. Unsightly nails may result from poor care, but they can also point to serious health issues. Spotting these signs early can help identify problems before they worsen. From vitamin deficiencies to hidden medical conditions, nails can offer vital clues about our overall health. During checkups, doctors often inspect nails since changes in color, texture, or growth may signal health problems. Even minor nail changes—like unusual colors, odd shapes, or thickness—can be your body’s way of asking for attention.

1.Yellow Nails

Yellow nails are most often due to a fungal infection, which is usually treatable. If left untreated, nails may become permanently damaged and even detach from the nail bed. If medication does not clear the yellow color, it could point to thyroid issues, diabetes, or rarely, cancer. Yellowing usually starts at the tips and moves toward the base. Toenails are more often affected because of the moist environment in shoes, but fingernails can also turn yellow. Smoking, certain medications, and frequent nail polish use can also cause yellowing. Try over-the-counter antifungal treatments first. If symptoms remain after several weeks, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis and care.
