Year Vanished: 1715
Year Found: 1928
The Urca de Lima, a Spanish ship, sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce, Florida, as part of the ill-fated Treasure Fleet of 1715. This fleet was established to transport valuable cargo between Spain and the Americas. Unfortunately, the Urca de Lima became one of the many victims of the treacherous waters during that voyage.
In 1928, the wreck of the Urca de Lima was rediscovered by adventurer William Beach, located just two hundred yards off the coast of Jack Island Park near Fort Pierce. This significant find not only reignited interest in the history of the Spanish Treasure Fleet but also highlighted the rich maritime heritage of the region.

UUrca de Lima
In 1987, the Urca de Lima became the first-ever designation as a Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve, recognizing its historical significance and the need for protection. Later, in 2001, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, further solidifying its status as an important site for maritime heritage.
It is believed that the Urca de Lima may have been carrying approximately $5 million in treasure at the time of her sinking. However, despite extensive recovery efforts over the years, little treasure has been found, leaving the recovery endeavors largely disappointing. This underscores the challenges faced by underwater archaeologists and treasure hunters in their quest to uncover the ship's lost riches.
