Though the countries funding the program have changed as the Boxer's design has evolved, this multi-armored battle vehicle has been in existence since the 2010s. Originally developed by an international collaboration of nations rather than by a single business like Lockheed or BAE, the Boxer is being overseen by the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation, or OCCAR.

One country that uses these 8x8 battle vehicles is Australia. Two vehicles, including the Boxer, were vying for the Land 400 Phase contract, which would decide which vehicle would replace the ASLAV fleet of the Australian Army. After winning, 257 ASLAVs will be replaced by boxers by 2021.
When it came to development, the fighting vehicle was 20,000 pounds lighter than most of its modern counterparts. Over time, there has been less of a size disparity between Boxers and other cars. Among the leading rivals of the Boxer in the market are the Nexter VBCI, General Dynamics Piranha V, and Patria AMV.
