The F/A-18 Hornet, an American fighter jet, has been adapted for use by the Canadian Air Force, building on the legacy of the original McDonnell Douglas Hornet. Following McDonnell Douglas's success in the 1980 New Fighter Aircraft Project, the company was awarded the contract for this renowned fighter jet, which began deliveries to the Canadian Forces in 1982.

The program has seen significant investment, with a total cost of $270.53 million and a unit cost of approximately $70.64 million as of FY2017. The Hornet has become a versatile platform, serving multiple nations and adapting to various air power needs.

There are two versions of the CF-18 Hornets: A and B. There were 98 CF-18A single-seat fighter/ground attack aircraft produced. A two-seater aircraft used for training is called the CF-18B. There are just 40 erected. Air strike missions were conducted by CF-18As until February 15, 2016. The F/A-18 Hornet received improvements and new design opportunities as a result of the two-phase Incremental Modernization Project, which was initiated in 2001 and completed in two stages. The upgrades featured enhanced air-to-ground and air-to-air combat capabilities, as well as improvements to the defensive suite and sensors. The communications system was replaced, as were the datalinks.
