Equipment for anti-submarine warfare, ground attack, anti-surface, information gathering, special operations (holding up to fifteen commandos in a transportable pod), and crisis management missions will be installed on Barracuda-class ships. Another version of the design, known as the Shortfin Barracuda, combines diesel and electric power. After submitting the proposal in 2015, Naval Group was chosen to manufacture twelve of these variations in 2016. Although many of the specifics are being kept under wraps, development is anticipated to start in 2021.
