Producers: Norinco Main Users: People's Liberation Army Unit Cost: $1–2 million* Program Cost: $4–5 billion* China's PLA uses the Type 96, also known as the ZTZ96, which is a second-generation main battle tank. The Type 96, which went into service in the late 1990s, is the last evolution of the Type 88. Currently, more than 2,000 Type 96s are in use, but just 814 Type 99s are. That represents a significant portion of China's 7,000 active-duty tanks.

The Type 96 tank is primarily armed with a ZPT-98 smoothbore cannon, which is equipped with a carousel autoloader and features a two-plane stabilization system. This advanced weaponry enhances the tank's accuracy and effectiveness in combat situations.

There are two main versions of the Type 96: Version A and Version B. The B version, which was first observed in 2016, introduces several significant upgrades over its predecessor. Notably, it features a new transmission, an enhanced computer and communications system, and an improved suspension.

Additional enhancements include a revamped exhaust system, an upgraded chassis, a more efficient ventilator, and a high-performance gun. The B version also boasts an updated fire-control mechanism, further improving targeting capabilities and overall operational effectiveness.
